What is IRC and EZTalk?

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat.  It allows for real time, text based chatting on the Internet.  IRC is the standard protocol used when chatting on the Internet and has been around before the invention of the World Wide Web.  Until recently, to use  IRC, you had to use special software such as mIRC or PIRCH to log into an IRC server on an IRC network, such as the Undernet.

The PreemiesChat area on TalkCity uses IRC via very new technology called Java or Browser based chat called EZTalk developed by TalkCity.  This allows Preemie Parents the ability to chat from any workstation logged into the Internet.  Parents can now chat from the Hospital, the Library, or even from Aunt Joan's workstation.  No special software, except for a Web Browser, needs to be installed.  This also allows parents to try chatting on PreemiesChat to see what it's like without much difficulty.

What is PIRCH and why should I have it?

If you think you like chatting with Preemie Parents and would like to stop by more often, you might think about using a dedicated IRC chat application, such as PIRCH.  The biggest advantages to using a dedicated IRC chat application are; 1. You have seperate windows for chatting and seperate windows for the advertisements. 2.  If you'd like to switch to your Web browser you don't lose your Chat connection every time like you do in EZTalk.  3.  There is less lag time or it's faster using an IRC application.

How do I get to #PreemiesChat with PIRCH?PIRCH

First you must download PIRCH and install it on your PC     Click on the PIRCH icon.

PIRCH instructions to add TalkCity into your PIRCH application:

1. Bring up the PIRCH Application

2. The Server Connection Window appears

3. Enter Name, Nickname, Password, Year Born.

4. Category is Family Parenting

5. Replease Room with #PreemiesChat

6. Connect to TalkCity

Congratulations you are now ready to connect to the Talkcity network

Congratulations and enjoy chatting with the group.

If you lke you can add this chat room in the Favorites Tab

Bring up Favorite Places and click on ADD and add #PreemiesChat to one of your favorite rooms.
